Acne FAQ

What causes acne?

Many different causes of acne exist, and no one knows for sure why some people have it worse than others; however, there are some known causes that contribute to acne:

  1. Family/Genetic history – If your parents or other family members had or have acne, you have a higher risk of developing acne.
  2. Hormones – Hormones are a known contributor to acne. Bursts of hormone activity during puberty are usually the first time adolescents experience acne. During menstrual cycles, girls often experience an increase in their breakouts due to their rapidly changing hormones. Hormones also play a role in acne that some women develop during their pregnancies. Certain diseases cause abnormal hormone levels that can result in acne, i.e., polycystic ovary syndrome and Cushing’s Syndrome. Adults can also experience acne as the hormone cycles fluctuate throughout life. Statistics show that over 30% of adults suffer from adult acne.
  3. Stress – An increase in stress can trigger a burst of hormonal activity that can result in an acne breakout.
  4. Steroids – Any person on steroids has an increased risk of developing steroid-related acne.
  5. Environmental – Exposure to certain chemicals or oils in your environment can put you at risk for developing or aggravating your acne. The oils in your hair products are an example of environmental oils that can increase your risk for acne development.
  6. Drugs – Use of amphetamines and other drugs have been proven to be an aggravator of acne.
I wash my face several times a day. Why do I get acne?

Some acne sufferers tend to over wash their face not realizing that a variety of biological factors may be contributing to their acne that are beyond the control of washing. Hair products are a main contributor to adding extra oils to the scalp and surrounding areas that can cause acne. You may find that by using Kairos anti-acne hair care products, that you will not feel like you have to wash your face as often because you will notice that it is not as oily as before.

What role does diet play in acne?

There has never been any documented medical literature that there is a correlation between diet and acne. However, there have been recent studies that indicate that dairy products may increase acne due the hormones added to those products. Some girls are convinced that their acne flares up when they eat large amounts of greasy, salty foods and chocolate. However, the theory is that girls crave these foods more often during their menstrual cycle and the hormone fluctuation is what actually causes the flare up of acne, not the diet.

Does the sun clear up my acne?

This is a misconception that many people believe to be true. There is no proven effect of sunlight on acne. The sun may temporarily dry up your acne, but over time, it will damage and weaken the follicles and make you even more susceptible to acne in the future. Also, your body’s natural response to repair dry skin is to produce even more oil. Furthermore, you may be exposing yourself to harmful effects of the sun including skin cancer, sun spots, wrinkles, burns, etc.

What is the best way to treat acne?

Each person is unique and their case should be evaluated by a health care professional to obtain the correct acne care regimen for that individual.

What kind of cosmetics and cleansers should an acne patient use?

If you are an acne sufferer, you should always look for noncomedogenic and oil-free products. Many products contain safe, natural oils such as the Kairos Acne Care Solutions Hair products. Many acne patients have sensitive skin, however, and you should always consult a doctor for a safe regimen for your specific condition.

Is it harmful to squeeze my blemishes?

It is definitely not a good idea to squeeze your blemishes. Forcing bacteria back into the skin can cause additional infection, inflammation and possible permanent scarring. The best treatment is acne prevention!
